Objective: Students will be exposed to This I Believe Statements.
W-up: A Walk To Remember is a personal story of a man who tells his story of when he was 17 years old. What is one thing that Landon now believes in and why? Landon believes….He learned that….through…. or He believes this because….Share these
1.Introduce **This I Believe project**/essential questions
MYP/BWI Unit EQ:
  • How does language allow us to express our beliefs?
Topical:
  • How can the way we structure our language help us to clearly communicate our ideas?
  • How can we ensure credibility when we write? Why is this important?
2.Write 10 I believe statements. Ex. I believe barriers of discrimination are broken through personal relationships. Subject = I, Verb = Believe – Object = ? verb to be or conditional verb

4.Students will match some of their belief statements and listen to at least 3 I believe essays Go to This I believe Essay Themes
HW: Students will reflect on what they learned from each podcast they listened to. Write down title of project and main idea. Come to school prepared to discuss 3 different This I Believe statements.




Day 2: Monday Nov. 28, 2011
Objective: Students will be able to identify differences between different kinds of personal writing to better understand their project focused on a personal essay.
W-up: Group share what you learned from one podcast you listened to. Include title – main point and how it relates to you.

2.Share differences between Personal essay, memoire and narrative
  • Personal essay Focused on a belief or insight about life that is important to
the writer
  • Personal narrative Focused on an important event
  • Personal memoir Focused on an important relationship between the writer
and a person, place, or object
The personal essay often combines elements of both the narrative and the memoir
since an insight about life or a personal belief is usually based upon both experiences and
relationships that have taught the writer what individual values are most important.
Read examples and identify:
1) Look for the author’s focused purpose (What is the author trying to say here?)
2) Identify which supporting details in each piece most effectively contribute to the author’s
purpose

Belief Consensus
W_up Students complete the What Do You Think? exercise

Activity:
Students get into 2 groups x2, x3.
• Groups should find one belief statement on which all members agree and record the
common belief. (See “Show Me the Money,” attached.) Then each member of the group
should tell a story (which everyone records) that shows the personal belief in action OR
explains why the teller believes as (s)he does.
• Class debrief: Have each group choose a “best” story. “Bestness” should be measured by
connection to belief—to share with entire class. Ask the class what they think the story is
showing. See how close the match is. Does it meet the “bestness” criteria?
• Students should develop at lest 3 their beliefs and
the stories that illustrate them (10 Minutes). Students can also use the belief discussed with group adding, extending, embellishing—OR choose another from the list.

Choose 1 of 3 ideas that you have and put a star by the one you could expand on the most.
HW. Complete a full graphic organizer.
Day 4: Thursday, Dec. 1, 2011
1.Identify the belief you will expand on based on the graphic organizer.
2.Listen to an I Believe statement under the same theme. Identify the belief and what examples were used.
3.Partner up and develop a belief in pairs. Looking at stories, rules, misconceptions, etc.
4.Discussed the idea of a LEAD.


Day 5, Friday, Dec. 2, 2011
Writing Day: Draft 1 – Students shared Seeing is believing – stories and support.
Designed outline and filled this in with the class – Went over Intro/hooks – body and conclusion

W-up: What is the lead for your “This I Believe” statement? – Why do you think this lead will be important?
Activity:
1. Complete a draft of the statement – Conference with teacher as needed.
